The short version

How a cable-drive speedometer works

A squared steel cable, spun by a gear on the transmission, turns a small permanent magnet inside the gauge. That spinning magnet drags a non-magnetic aluminium cup (the "speed cup") through induced eddy currents; a fine hairspring pushes back. The needle settles where drag and spring balance — and because drag rises with cable speed, that balance point is your road speed.

No electronics, no sensor, no computer. The same shaft also steps down through gears to roll the odometer drums. It's a beautifully simple machine — which is exactly why a little friction or dried grease throws it off.

Needle bounces or jumps

Classic dry-cable "whip." The inner cable binds inside its housing, winds up, then releases. Nearly always cured by cleaning and re-lubricating the cable. Fix →

Whirring, squealing or grinding

A dry cable talking to you. Route with gentle sweeps, keep it as short as practical, and lubricate with graphite or PTFE — not oil or heavy grease. Fix →
